RANYA
Ranya is songwriter Arjan Terpstra die catchy melodieën paart aan fijnmazige songs. Zijn verrassende popsongs zoeken de grenzen op, zonder ooit het publiek uit het oog te verliezen.
Zijn muziek wordt voor het eerst uitgegeven als EP, getiteld The Friends we Are (2022). De songs kenmerken zich door het gebruik van alternatieve gitaar tunings en heeft invloeden uit zowel nineties pop en grunge, als delta blues en Americana.
Die frisse mix is ontstaan op het podium. Met 12 jaar live performances in deltablues act Long Lost Ponies en andere acts, werd de basis gelegd voor de huidige koers: geen blues, geen pop, geen rock, maar iets moois daar tussenin.
David Sylvian, Pearl Jam, Anthony and the Johnsons, Patrick Watson en andere namen zijn genoemd in relatie tot Ranya’s zang en songwriting. Vergelijkingen die volgens Ranya zelf “nogal vergezocht zijn, en ook een beetje wreed, gezien vanuit mijn perspectief.”

Ranya is the stage name of songwriter Arjan Terpstra, from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His music bolts together catchy melodies with eloquent songwriting, seeking new musical frontiers without losing touch with his audience of pop lovers who want a little extra from their music.
A first online taste of Ranya’s music can be found on the 2023 EP The Friends we Are, yielding a three-pronged sample of his songwriting range. Alternate guitar tunings abound, and the careful listener will discern elements of both alt pop and rock, as well as finger-picking styles from delta blues and Americana.
Ranya’s fresh approach to music was born on the stage. Playing in deltablues and pop/rock acts laid the foundation for his current style of music: not pop, not rock, and not blues, but something that sits nicely in between. David Sylvian, Pearl Jam, Anthony and the Johnsons, Patrick Watson, Joni Mitchell, and many other names have been offered by fans in relation to Ranya’s songs, but the singer himself politely declines the references, “as they are a bit cruel, from my perspective.”
